What types of fish can I house with my male betta?
I recently purchased a 5 gallon tank for my male betta fish. I want to add more fish, but I am not sure which ones the betta will like, and how many I should put in my tank.
Fish that are smaller than you betta but not much smaller and they can not have a big wavy tail. When you put them in there watch them and make sure they are not being picked on. If they r take them out they can kill them. You will have to keep a eye on them for the next few days.Mabye just put 2 or 3 in there. Since it is a five gallon 5 fish is the maximum u should put in there.
the fewer the better..
any other fish should be fine, as long as it doesnt look like another male betta.
keep an eye on him, most of the time they are fine with other fish species, sometimes they arent.

No other beta fish & only a few more with such a small tank with the same sized fish as the beta with the same water & heat requirements as the beta, not goldfish, mollies might be good but often beta's are best on their own, they are solitary fish & often other fish nip at their pretty fins !! Any fish that is bigger than the betta. If you want to get fish that are smaller then the betta, make sure that they are schooling fish and that you get more than one. Believe or not, bettas aren't as aggressive as most people think. They are only aggressive towards other bettas. Just make sure that he has some rock formations to make his own "territory". You can house any other fish with a Betta, as long as it's not another Betta. Betta is a foreign word for fighting fish. Sometimes Bettas like to be iscolated from all other fish in general, because if lets say you but a goldfish in there, and the Betta doesn't want another fish housed with him/her they will fight untill the death. Usually the Betta ALWAYS wins.
