What fresh/cold water tropical fish swim at the top of the tank?
I have just set up a small fish tank and have fresh/cold water tropical fish ( loach/chiclid/cory/tetra/barb) in total 11 fish with most of them swimming at the bottom or middle of the tank. I would like some fish that swim around the top of the tank. Can anyone make some suggestions.
some species swimming at the top of the tank are gouramis, and danios, bettas (siamese fighters) and if you want a fish that almost always swims at the top, the hatchetfish and Butterfly fish. Due to having cold water i would only recommend the Zebra danio, or similar, but more often kept coldwater, The white cloud mountain minnow, both lively shoaling fishes. Good luck with fish-keeping!

Dead ones.

I know butterfly fish swim only at the top of the tank but i would still have a heater for all those fish you stated just to keep the temp constant.

How big is your tank first of all. It better be at least 30 gallons with those fish, at least. The "chiclid" (it's cichlid by the way, like sick-lid) will eventually outgrow and eat your almost all of those, if he ever gets hungry. Or chase them till they die, cause he is VERY territorial. Anyway an african butterfly swims at the top, that is a cool, rare fish. Mostly eats bugs,(small crickets) won't really take to flakes. I can't remember how big they get, not very I think.
Hope this helps

Actually, it's cichlid, not ciclid or chiclid. And depending on what kind of cichlids you got, in a few months you may not have any tetra's or barbs left so that won't be a problem as far as your fish count is concerned. Honestly – if you don't want to have anything BUT cichlids in your tank (they're very aggressive, get rather large, and will eat anything and everything smaller than them) I would recommend reselling them back to the fishstore and sticking with generic freshwater/tropical fish like the tetras. Killifish are almost entirely surface swimmers and are actually very colorful for FW fish – but you typically have to special order them or purchase them from a site like http://www.aquabid.com. Gouramis are also a good choice.. but not all of them stay close to the top (e.g. most of the dwarf varieties). I would recommend pearl or gold gouramis as surface dwellers.
