What are good (non betta) fish for a 5 gallon filtered tank?
A friend of mine had a Betta in a 5 gallon for 2 years and it died recently. He is looking for another fish, but doesn't want another betta. I'm used to larger tanks and don't know what to suggest. He says he only wants one or two fish and the tank can be cold water or heated. Any suggestions?
white cloud minnows are the best suited in my opinion.
PAradice fishes come up often, but they arent really suited for the size, more in the 10 gallon range.
White clouds are schooling, but 3 in a 5 gallon is a good number.
—I know the following will be suggested by some people–
Goldfish: im sure u know they arent suitable for a 5 gallon, 1 goldfish really needs at least 55 gallons.
Neons and cardinals: again not really the best choice for these conditions. Better in the 10 gallon range
DAnios: can be suitable, but they like open areas more than white clouds.

I don't know. It seems almost cruel to keep something in such a compact living arrangement.
You'd only want to stock it with small fish and the smaller fish available in the hobby are also the ones who prefer (need) to school with their own kind. A 5 gallon tank seems, in my opinion, too small for this.
If he wants something unusual, maybe he could keep some African dwarf frogs or firebelly newts?

My dad owns a pond shop, and the best thing for that size of tank would be an imported goldfish…
contrary to most goldfish, the imported ones from asia can take on many different colors and shades of brown, white, gold, orange, red, and others…
it'd be a perfect fit, plus they are very easy to keep

2 or 3 neon tetras maybe just a2 cory catfish and paradise fish 1 2 maybe 2 mollys they iwll mate 2

go with some tetras, corydas, mollys, or platys.. very pretty fish, very cheap.. dont grow too big.. get one of each.. you'll have a very nice compatable tank… all tropical by the way.

guppy's, neons, cory's, maybe even a gold fish, just be sure that the fish you buy will stay small, and if you get a schooling fish get atleast 3 or 4 of them so they'll feel safer in your tank.

this might be a shocker, but i reccommend a red cap oranda or some other fancy finned gold fish. i have a five gallon… the tank isnt heated but the water is filtered. and he is going just fine in there. since it is only a 5 gallon i would not suggest more then one fish in the tank… specially a gold fish. they are what are considered… *dirty* and if there is too many of them inside… they will kill each other off cause of the toxins they release in the waste they make. black moors are cool… they have calico gold fish as well that are pretty neat. there is alot. less you want tropical… i cant help you in that area, im a gold fish person!
Good luck
