How much would it cost to start a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium?
I am planning on starting a 10 gallon freshwater aquarium. I can’t really find many 10 gallon starter kits online or in stores. Would it be cheaper just to buy everything separately or in a kit? And where can I find a 10 gallon starter kit. I live in the D/FW Texas area. I need info on prices minus the fish. I’m just worried about supplies at this point. Help PLEASE?!?!?!
Well I would go with Petsmart over wall mart. Petsmart use top fin, great tanks. The starter will run around 40. Less if you are going gold fish. The rest is up to you. The deco can run 7 bucks on up. Then there is the gravel, air stones, pump, thermometer, air tubing, suction cups, and maybe even salt. What kind of fish are you going with? That will have alot to do with setting up your tank as well.

Try to buy one used. I live in Delaware (I’ve heard it’s expensive to live in the north east) and I can get a used 15 gallon tank for $10 and a 20 gallon for $15. All the other stuff will probably bring you up to $100 to $150, but not much more than that.

just bought one
A starter kit for a ten gallon usually costs 50-60 bucks, I’d actually advise you to get a 20 gallon which is about 10 dollars more, your fish would do much better in there. Fish food will cost 5 dollars. Water conditoner and testing material 10-20 dollars. Gravel, plants and ornaments 20 dollars. So about 100 for all the material not including fish… You should also be prepared to buy medicine for fin rot, ich, dropsy etc… Be prepared fish cost a lot -.- definitely more than hamsters did XD
Oops I forgot go to craigslist, nice people give away or sell them used a lot cheaper sometimes.

wlamart, petco, and petsmart should all have them. they’re generally around $40 to $50.
if you get everything separately (give or take, prices vary):
tank – $11
gravel – $5
filter – $14
net – $2
thermometer – $2
heater – $18
water conditioner – $3
food – $3
gravel vacuum – $4
test kits for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate – $10+
however… kits don’t always come with everything… some don’t have heaters. most don’t have gravel vacuums. so pay attention to what is included and what you’ll still need to buy. basically you’ll need at least $70 for supplies.
