What fish go together in a tropical fish tank?
I’ve always had tropical fish on and off – but this time I’m going to do it properly and build it up month by month. my question is I have a four foot fish tank and want a diverse a range as possible. – not just neons. I read years ago what groups of fish you can put in a four foot tank and how many of each – does anyone have any ideas?
errrrrrrr – it is – four foot long and 1 foot tall
I agree the other dimensions would be useful to calculate the exact volume. However, have a read of this:

I wrote it to list genuinely peaceful community fish, nothing that will cause too much trouble as long as they’re stocked properly in their right numbers. That should give you some ideas anyway.

It would be better if you give the other dimensions of the tank, so we can calculate the volume and then give proper stocking suggestions. for all we know a tank could be 4 feet wide but only 1 foot tall and long!

jogi’s right… it also depends on the look you want. some prefer a few bigger fish in a large tank to look impressive, others prefer lots of little ones. I would personally choose the little-fish option because its a bit kinder to the fish (having a big fish in a restricted space is a bit cruel) and also because schooling fish look good! you could get some live-bearing fish (guppies, mollies etc) if you want babies. guppies are nice to look at too…

Most aquariums are better off with few species. Its a much better environment for the fish, even though it can be a bit boring.
Tetras and barbs can be mixed in the same environment and can provide great variety. There are hundreds of species to choose from. They are schooling though and 5 of each species is best.
Platies, swords, and guppies can mix together to provide lots of color without schooling needs.
Maybe you could try a theme like a South American river with buenos aires tetras, cories, a dwarf gourami.
