Malawi Tank Video! Cichlid, Mbuna, African Fish, Aquarium
This is my 300l (ca. 75 gal.) malawi tank with fishes / cichlids / mbuna from lake Malawi, east africa. My Malawi tank / aquarium is decorated only with rocks, this is necessary because mbuna from lake malawi are rock dwelling cichlids. Mbuna like rocks, caves and sand, so the malawi tank has to be decorated with huge stones. They are quite agressive and territoral at times but belong to the most beautiful and colorful sweetwater fishes.
In my Malawi tank, i keep Labeotropheus trewavasae, Tropheops Macrophtalmus, Pseudotropheus Saulosi, Maylandia Estherae, Labidochromis Hongi and Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow). Especially the Labeotropheus and Tropheops are mbuna / mbunas that look very good and show interesting behaviour.
Tropheops macrophthalmus is the only mbuna / cichlid / fish in my malawi tank that has got a name. And no, its not nemo! I call him “Saddam” because he is sometimes a little tyrant!

Saving Nemo – Vanuatu
January 2005
Since the success of the film ‘Finding Nemo’, demand for tropical fish has soared. But the seas of the Pacific are literally being emptied to feed this frenzy.
Tropical fish are now virtually worth their weight in gold. “Everybody wants one because of this Nemo film,” explains SRS Manager Larry Dacles. His company has a monopoly on tropical fishing in Vanuato, home to some of most popular tropical fish in the world. Former workers claim it got this monopoly by bribing government officials. In just three years, SRS has alienated local tourism operators, who depend on the tropical fish as an attraction, scientists, fear an ecological disaster in the making, and the traditional owners of the reefs. “They take anything and everything,” complains one local. “It’s out of control.” Already there has been a 50% fall in tropical fish from the reefs. Now, it’s not so much a case of finding Nemo as saving him.

72 gallon Bow Front Reef Aquarium
This is my saltwater reef tank its a 72 gallon bow front, I use a protein skimmer filtration system (is there any other? lol) and a calcium reactor which has been a pain to get working right, a 1200 gallons per hour water circulation pump, a 300 watt heater and a 1/5 hp Chiller to keep the water cool in the summer.
Lighting is 48″ CORALIFE Pro HQI Metal Halide/Compact Fluorescent with 4 LED Moonlights.
Currently I have 90 lbs of live rock, 1 Blue Hippo Tang (Dory), 1 Yellow Tang (Randy), 1 Kole Tang (Brownie), 2 False Percula Clown Fish (Marlin & Nemo), 1 Cleaner Wrasse (George) 1 Pacific cleaner shrimp (Delicious), 1 Blood Red Fire Shrimp (C0cktail Sauce), 1 Red Scooter Blenny (Dobby), 3 Goby Firefish (Larry, Curly & Moe) and two Pincushion Urchins.
My soft corals are a Green Bubble Coral, Green Closed Brain Coral, Frogspawn Coral, Purple Mushroom Coral, Orange Mushroom Polyp Corals aka Hairy Mushrooms, Colt Coral, an assortment of Polyp Corals and some Xenia Colony Corals,
Hard Corals are a couple of Capricornis corals and a Cats Paw coral.
So with 600 lbs of saltwater, 90 lbs of live rock and a stand which weighs around 100 lbs in all the entire tank weighs around 800 lbs.
I have to say that running a saltwater fish tank is a lot of work especially when youre doing a 10% to 20% water change every week but its so worth it once the eco system is running smoothly. It has taught me a lot about reef life and what it takes to keep them alive.
