What is the most beautiful, and exciting, tropical freshwater fish, that I can purchase for my aquarium?
I have a 20 gallon tank.
Hey, I don't know if you have any other fish in the tank, or if it's cycled, so take both of those in consideration. Here is a list of some beautiful smaller fish that may do well in your 20 gallon tank:
bettas (no fin nippers in the tank, and no fish with long fins in there)
honey gourami
dwarf gourami
sparkling gourami
german blue rams (very sensitive to water qualtiy, mine is gorgeous though!)
bolivian rams (not as colorful as the german, but much more hardy)
boesemani rainbowfish
threadfin rainbowfish
red rainbowfish
lake kutubu rainbowfish
neon rainbowfish
celebes rainbowfish
chocolate lyretail killifish
clown killifish
red killifish
goldenwonder killifish
paradise fish
banded dwarf cichlid
borelli's dwarf cichlid
cockatoo, crested dwarf cichlid
blue cheek dwarf cichlid
blue sky apisto
rainbow crib (a bit on the big side)
poor man's discus
Of course you will have to research compatibility and water conditions, but this will hopefully get you started.

Tropical freshwater?!? Fish
References :
Beta, sometimes they get bored and will swim around playfully. Mine does at least and I have noticed that they seem to last longer.
I am by no means a fish expert though and that is just my favorite type of freshwater fish.

if u are a starter guppies are beautifull and easy.
bettas are for people a little bit more expirienced but need to be alone in a little glass

I love Angelfish. I have a tank for those. (one just passed, though. I usually keep 3 in there). They're almost like dogs – they gather at the front of the tank when they see me.
I also like Gold Guaramis. I have a tank of those, too. They're a bit nasty to little fish, but they're so pretty and have personality.

Lion fish… beautiful (cuz it's got spectacular coloration & neat looking spines) … exciting (cuz it's poisonous & deadly) …
Oh wait – darn … Lion fish are salt water critters.
Ummm … betas are nice… long flowing fins & tails that look like silk in the water. Just remember to only keep one to a tank… get some neon tetras to add more color. Guppys can be cool too.
