My Freshwater Tropical Fish Tank – 1

There are 3 angelfish, 2 redskirts, 1 balloon ram, 1 cardinal, a couple of guppies and shrimps.
Also a driftwood in the center, which took us over 6 months to get it fully treated. There is java moss all over the driftwood, and a big nana in the back. We put three bamboo sticks in the corner as well.

are shells from souvenir shops ok to put into a tropical freshwater fish tank?

they seem to have some kind of varnish or gloss over them. are they safe to put into my tropical fish tank or will they release calcium and make the water harder etc?

No, they are not.

Chances are, they will slowly, over time, dissolve in the fresh water… Messing with water parameters, the hardness, as well as just whats in the water. Chances are, it will add huge calcium diposits.

95 Litre (25 Gallon) Planted Community Tropical Freshwater Tank

Stocking:
1 Angelfish
4 Tiger barbs (2 of which are green)
2 Corydoras
4 Glass bloodfin tetra
10 Kuhli loach (5 banded, 5 brown)
1 Bristlenose pleco (female)
6 Cardinal tetras
1 Singapore wood shrimp

Plants:
Vallisneria spiralis
Cryptocoryne nevelli
Cryptocoryne becketti
Cryptocoryne diversen
Echinodorus amazonicus
Microsorum pteropus
Anubias -something-
Vesicularia dubyana
Cabomba aquatica
Elodea canadensis
Plus some other stem plants I’m not entirely sure on yet.

Tank dimensions: L80xW30xH40cm.
Tank Volume: 25 gallons / 95 litres.
Lights: 1x60cm T8 sunlight tube – 0.8 wpg. 10-12 hours a day.
CO2: None.
Airation: 8″ air stone on for 4 hours after lights off.
Substrate: Play sand.
Fertilisers: PlantaMin.

If you want to try tropical fish keeping I recommend…
1. Use play sand, not gravel. Stays cleaner, looks natural, looks awesome.
2. Get a rectangular tank like this – Fish can hide in cube tanks and corner tanks!
3. Google every species of fish or plant before you buy it. Otherwise you could end up getting some pleasant little fish which grows to a 2ft terror.

What types of small tropical freshwater fish will be companionable with beta (Japanese fighting fish)?

I have a 10 gallon fish tank and I have heard that some other types of fish are compatible with betas.
Thanks

The thing with bettas is to have a back up plan. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn’t. Generally you stay away from surface fish like live bearers for instance, but many people have success with them. However just as many don’t and the unprepared end up with piles of dead fish, or one dead betta. So, I suggest you have an empty tank on standby and always be prepared to return the fish you bought if it doesn’t work out. Be sure the tank is well planted and has hiding places in case anyone attacks anyone else. Depending on the betta, some are very comfortable with other fish and some are too hyper aggressive to be around any other fish.
It just depends on the personality of the fish.

The fish I reccomend with betta are: Dwarf Rasbora 6+, Galaxy Rasbora 6+, Corydoras, white cloud minnows6+, Cardinal Tetras 6+, and wild guppies and various other rasbora species able to live in 10 gallons. Do your research before you buy any!

And yes as was mentioned, they’re Siamese Fighting Fish and are found naturally in Thailand.
