How To Clean A Fish Tank or Aquarium, Remove Algae, Pet Care
Rachel shows you the best way to clean and maintain your aquarium or fish tank the right way. This includes how much of a water change you should do, an easy way to remove algae from the sides of the tank, the use of water conditioner and aquarium salt, changing filters and tips on using suction tube or siphon to clean the gravel. Fresh water fish do require a certain amount of salt in the water to be healthy. This is the easiest way to clean your tank correctly so that your pet fish stay healthy and happy and dont get sick.

I never recommend getting an Oscar – though they are delightful, one single Oscar grows HUGE-EACH OSCAR requires, they say-a 55 gallon fish tank-minimum. I found this to be untrue. They actually need a 75 gallon tank PER FISH minimum. Oscars are poo factories-one single Oscar produces *MORE* waste than a dozen goldfish and I’m not lying. Oscar are high maintenance and the water *MUST* be at the 80 degrees mark at all times-colder than 80 degrees it stresses them out.

Your friend must be referring to an Oscar fish. I despise this activity of feeding Oscars other fish-though people claim “they are just feeding their fish” it is sadistic. PLUS most goldfish and other fish harbor parasitic diseases and contributes much to hole-in-the-head disease which is the most common demise of Oscars. Though some attribute it to an infection-not much is known about it–hole-in-the-head disease may also be an autoimmune disorder as the result of cannibalism of its own kind.

“matching temperatures” is irrelevant-fish are more resilient than that – tap water temp is just fine; adding conditioner is more important-because you are not emptying all of the old fish water, actually less than 1/4th of it.

Get rid of the gravel-you don’t need it and you can see how effective your filters are. Poo should most mostly gone in a few hours after the fish pooed.

I work in a biology lab. I do partial water changes a couple time a day, lol. Oh, one thing for the water refilling part, try to use a smaller jug. If you place one hand over into the tank while you pour the water onto the hand, instead of directly into the tank, you will neither disturb the gravel nor any aquatic plants that you have installed.
