I read authors of aquarium books use this line many times: you cannot over filtrate an aquarium. Pretty much, the more filtration, the better. However if you choose to put a lot of filtration on one aquarium, always be aware of whether the fish are having any type of trouble swimming in one place. If they are unable to keep themselves upright or are having trouble swimming, you should reduce filtration flow immediately.

You don’t need …
You don’t need carbon per se. It helps with discoloration of the water and odors by absorbing certain toxins. If you have plants you want to avoid it because it absorbs nutrients as well. So no live plants then it is good, if you have live plants avoid it.
