How often must a Betta fish go up the surface to breathe?
My Betta fish goes up to the surface every 10 to 30 seconds to breathe. Is this normal?
How often will depend a lot on the conditions in which they're kept. They have a labyrinth organ which ALLOWS them to breathe air at the surface, but they also have gills, which allows them to extract dissolved oxygen from the water. So how often they will breathe at the surface depends mostly on:
1) If you have a filter or airstone to circulate dissolved oxygen throughout the water – if you don't use these, they'll need to surface more often, because they need to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen at the surface.
2) Temperature – as the water temperature increases, it holds less dissolved oxygen, but the metabolism of the fish increases, so they require more oxygen. Bettas should have a temperature between 76-86oF, but I prefert o keep mine at 76-80o unless I'm breeding them.
3) Water Quality – if the fish is in a bowl rather than a tank, products of it's metabolism (ammonia and nitrite) which are toxic to the fish in relatively small amounts build up faster. Both of these are toxic in that they interfere with the ability of a fish to extract oxygen from the water using it's gills and bind it to receptors in the bloodstream to be carried where needed in the body. This makes the fish "gasp" for air at the surface. (If in a bowl, you should be doing 100% water changes every 2-3 days.)

Starting out with a 55 gallon fish tank. HELP! ;)?
Ok. Hey there guys and gals. I recently got a 55 gallon fish tank with the works. I have all the equipment set up, just waiting for the water to get enough bacteria set before adding fish. Here's the thing. I am pretty much a novice on communities, so I basically would LOVE to hear some advice on what to get, what goes good together. I really want goldfish of a few varieties, would love to get about 5 Neon Tetra, a few zebra danios, and I also have my eye on a new fish discovered in 2004 which is a burmese border Botia, and I would like your opinions if these fish will all go together well. I am wondering if the goldfish will bother the zebra danios or the tetra. And what else can I add do you think? I would love a colorful and diverse variety. And also would love to know what the limit in amount of fish I should get with all the breeds I discussed earlier taken in consideration. Tell me what you think!! Thank you so much! Muah Muah! ![]()
Thank you so much!!!! Both of your answers are absolutely INCREDIBLE!! I have to admit, I am a bit disappointed about the goldfish. I do love them….awwww. Oh well. Guess I will go with others! Thank you for your precise and detailed answers!
Ok well if you want to keep Goldfish you will have to have only cold-water fish. Neon Tetras and Danios are tropical fish and require a heater and a temperature of about 79 degrees. There is no easy way to tell you how many fish you can keep. You have to factor in the adult size of each fish, how much waste they produce(Goldfish produce a lot of waste and you will only be able to keep a few in a 55g cause they get really big), where they like to swim, etc. It is good that you are trying to cycle your aquarium before adding the fish. That way you won't loose as many fish later. If you decide to not get Goldfish and go with tropical insead of coldwater fish(I strongly suggest tropical there is a TON of tropical fish available) and you want to stick with the species you mentioned then here are some facts. They are both schooling species and need to be in groups of at least 3 but 6 is better. They don't get very big but if you want to get bigger fish for your tank be aware that the smaller ones might get eaten if you don't do your research first. I would highly suggest this site:
