What types of fish can I house with my male betta?

I recently purchased a 5 gallon tank for my male betta fish. I want to add more fish, but I am not sure which ones the betta will like, and how many I should put in my tank.

Fish that are smaller than you betta but not much smaller and they can not have a big wavy tail. When you put them in there watch them and make sure they are not being picked on. If they r take them out they can kill them. You will have to keep a eye on them for the next few days.Mabye just put 2 or 3 in there. Since it is a five gallon 5 fish is the maximum u should put in there.

Very starnge fish discussion at work… care to give your two cents?

We were discussing the merits of genetically creating boneless fish for those people who like fish but dont like the bones or those who would eat fish if the didnt have to worry about bones

Would be very easy to catch
would be a blob
where would the eyes end up?

this cause quite a laugh in the office

I think some folk here are taking your question too seriously!!

It wouldn't be easy to catch, it would be all squishy and slip through a net or your fingers.
As for the eyes, I reckon they would end up on the the top of it as all the rest of the body would hang down into the water.

anyone know how to build a fish aquarium…? what will ineed and how…? where do i get supplies…?

i want to build a custom tank for an upstairs room of my house and was wondering if any one knew how and could give me some… tips, pointers, advice, directions, websites, stores,

The bigger the tank the better. Your best choice would be to visit a good pet store. You will need the tank of coarse (glass is better). I would recommend a stand. Water weighs a lot. Then gravel. Light natural colors make fish more comfortable. I would recommend plastic plants opposed to live plants for a beginner. Also fish should be provided with stones and other structures as you see fit. Natural colors are best. You will definitely need a filter. I use penguin brand with the bacteria wheels. These wheels form a good bacteria that consumes waste. Another essential is a heater. You will want it set according to your fish type. You can goggle tropical fish to get aquarium fish information. A lot of fish are known to jump so be sure to include a cover. Lighting is an essential for an aquarium on display. Avoid natural light because this will cause an algae out break. Also be sure to turn the light off at night. My 55 gallon aquarium is cleaned once a month by sucking about 3/4 of the water out by an aquarium vacuum and the filters are replaced. The water is then filled back up with tap water. Chemicals are needed for tap water. Be sure to get a book or advice from a pet store or ask a more specific question here.

What is the most beautiful, and exciting, tropical freshwater fish, that I can purchase for my aquarium?

I have a 20 gallon tank.

Hey, I don't know if you have any other fish in the tank, or if it's cycled, so take both of those in consideration. Here is a list of some beautiful smaller fish that may do well in your 20 gallon tank:
bettas (no fin nippers in the tank, and no fish with long fins in there)
honey gourami
dwarf gourami
sparkling gourami
german blue rams (very sensitive to water qualtiy, mine is gorgeous though!)
bolivian rams (not as colorful as the german, but much more hardy)
boesemani rainbowfish
threadfin rainbowfish
red rainbowfish
lake kutubu rainbowfish
neon rainbowfish
celebes rainbowfish
chocolate lyretail killifish
clown killifish
red killifish
goldenwonder killifish
paradise fish
banded dwarf cichlid
borelli's dwarf cichlid
cockatoo, crested dwarf cichlid
blue cheek dwarf cichlid
blue sky apisto
rainbow crib (a bit on the big side)
poor man's discus

Of course you will have to research compatibility and water conditions, but this will hopefully get you started.

Aquarium Fish Tank Re-Decorations?

I recently had a major ich and fungal breakout. Im planning on re-starting my tank. But, I would need to keep the same fish. I have 1 platy, 1 cory and 2 neons that survived. My parents won't let me return the fish or give the fish to my school tank. After I have cycled the tank and re-decorate it, would it be possible to house, 6 phantoms and 4 Kuhli Loaches with the fish I have?

yes it will be absolutely fine

hope that helps
Good luck

Saltwater Fish Tank Supplies+Questions?

What are the needed supplies to set-up a good saltwater fish tank? Do you recommend buying the supplies separate of in a kit? I am planning on getting fish- only but if you have other suggestions please tell me. Also what are some good starter fish that fit in specific tank sizes? Thanks.
EDIT: For tank size I don't have a specific size in mind. I need suggestions on putting inverts. or not.

I do not suggest a kit. I do suggest some good books.

The first item yo get should be a book. Either from the library or a book store. Reading and planning in advance will save you many hours of hard work and many $$$$s.

I suggest:
The New Marine Aquarium: Step-By-Step Setup & Stocking Guide
The Conscientious Marine Aquarist: A Commonsense Handbook for Successful Saltwater Hobbyists

I know both the authors and these books will set you on the right course.

As for fish, the detailed answers are in the book, but start with one fish. Slowly add more as the tank cycles. If you set up with a plan in mind, it will work better.

Also look at what your area pet stores are able to supply, or what you can order online to be delivered.

First of all, DO NOT buy and introduce sensitive invertebrates or corals into the tank at any time during the initial cycling process.

When it comes to selecting starter fishes, as well as other livestock for the future, plan ahead and prepare a "species list", then learn as much as you can about each animal's characteristics, dietary requirements, feeding habits and captive care, BEFORE buying anything! The above books will help with that ALOT.

Buy inexpensive, durable, hardy fish that are known to do well during the tank cycling process. Some of the best fish to start an aquarium with are Damsels or Chromis', members of the Family Pomacentridae.

Know what to look for when inspecting fish to buy. The quality of health of the animals plays a vital role in your success with their care.

Good luck and enjoy the hobby!

If you want inverts, then get the books. I also suggest a Practical Guide to Corals by Eric Borneman. Another good book to make sure you plan properly.
