Everything About Tropical Fish Tanks and Saltwater Aquariums
1 Gallon Saltwater Aquarium and Globe Ecosystems
Filed under: Saltwater Aquariums

1 Gallon Pico Reef, 1/2 gallon sealed SPS reef tank, 19 gallon bog terrarium globe, 75 gallon planted tank with Co2 injection. Keeping ecosystems in odd containers changes the chemistry and dynamics interestingly and has a direct correlation to evaporation rates, nitrate binding or export, and temperature stabilization to name a few.

I will be glad to discuss the biology associated with any micro reef tank care so just post in the comments section and feel free to link your own micro reefs if you keep them.

certain shapes for the captive reef help the tricky balances to self-stabilize in time, and that is why you see the amount of life you do along with the video proof that this is not a plumbed or cheated system in anyway, it’s simply a fishbowl or vase reef. These were the first sub-gallon pico reefs invented that you will find on the internet, none are older and as long-lived with web documentation. if you’d like to research pico reef history start at Reefs.Org and reefcentral around 2002 and nano-reef.com

These forums paved the way for the explosion in popularity you see now with micro aquaria and document the progress of this layman’s science

I thought it would be interesting for all of us to share pico reef design concepts on this video so post anything you know about them.

nice to meet you all and thank you for watching!

I stay active enough on this forum and in the marine and fish forums it won’t be too hard to find me so we can chat about marine biology and aquatic sciences. I will also help you build and stabilize these so hit me up in the comments if you start one.

what is the difference between a reef aquarium and a saltwater aquarium?

see i want to set up an aquarium for saltwater fish but i’m not sure how and what i need. Also if a reef and a saltwater are the same or different ?

a reef tank contains coral and invertebrates in addition to fish. A saltwater can contain fish only, fish only with live rock, or be a reef tank.

As far as what you need I’m going to assume you know about freshwater tanks and go from there. Above and beyond what you need for a freshwater tank you will need a protein skimmer. If you go with a reef tank you will also need enhanced lighting. You will have to have at least high output florescent or compact florescent. You will need a hydrometer which measures salt levels. For a reef tank you will also need live rock and live sand additives of various chemical elements and a specialized test kit, and either and RO filter or a local fish store that sells RO water,

Aquarium fish tank baby fry black mollies molly babies six weeks old
Filed under: aquarium fish tanks

Here are my two new babies at six and a half weeks old. They are black mollies and are about 3/4″ long. Notice the row of quarters near the aquarium to compare how small they are. I’m a new aquarium enthusiast and was so surprised to have these tiny little fish born in my very first aquarium! Right now, they live in a one gallon tank with a “baby hide-out” which is an artificial grass hiding place for the fry. An Asian style miniature bridge is also in the aquarium for hiding and swimming through.

When they get big enough, in about six months, I was told, they can move back into the regular aquarium. This is a top view. Please see my other video showing them. Please ignore brightness, etc, I’m new to aquariums and new to take fish videos. :)

What equipment is needed for a saltwater aquarium?

I have a freshwater aquarium right now and would like to switch it eventually to a small saltwater aquarium. My tank is 10 gallons so I was planning on only getting one clown fish with a starfish or shrimp. I have a heater, an out of the tank filter, and thermometer. Is a protein skimmer and an air pump also necessary? Also my tank light is quite old and doesn’t have the wattage on it, so should i assume that I would need to upgrade the cover on my aquarium?

a 10 gallon saltwater are for experts, beginners shouldnt start with smaller tanks because the smaller you go the harder it will be, as a 10 gallon will have water parameters that litteray will chan ge daily.

You wont need a protein skimmer on a 10 gallon but they have nano ones that are better than nothing.

Even though a single clownfish in a 10 gallon isnt much, the water parameters will kill most beginner saltwater keepers.
